Microsoft has officially stepped in to squash a lingering rumor regarding the financial targets of its gaming division. Following reports that the company had mandated a steep 30% profit margin for Xbox, a Microsoft spokesperson has clarified that this specific figure is “incorrect.”
The Origin of the Rumor The controversy stems from a report circulated in October (originally via Bloomberg) which suggested that Microsoft CFO Amy Hood had implemented a new, aggressive financial target for the Xbox division in late 2023. The report claimed that Xbox, which historically operated with margins between 10% and 20%, was now being asked to hit 30%—a figure significantly higher than the industry average.
This alleged target was widely cited by analysts and fans as the driving force behind recent controversial moves at Xbox, including:
- Studio closures (such as Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks).
- Price hikes for Xbox Game Pass.
- Project Latitude: The internal strategy to port first-party Xbox games (like Indiana Jones and Halo) to PlayStation 5 to increase software revenue.
Microsoft’s Response In a statement to CNBC, Microsoft addressed these claims directly. While the company acknowledged that it sets “ambitious goals” for its divisions, it explicitly stated that the “reported 30% profit margin target was incorrect.”
What This Means While the denial strikes down the specific number, it doesn’t negate the reality of Xbox’s shifting strategy. The division is undoubtedly under pressure to recoup the $69 billion investment in Activision Blizzard. Even if the target isn’t exactly 30%, the push for higher profitability is evident in their recent pivot toward being a multi-platform publisher rather than just a hardware manufacturer.
For now, Microsoft wants to clear the air: there is no “magic number” they are chasing, even if the belt-tightening suggests otherwise.
