Marathon Art Lead Joseph Cross Departs Bungie Ahead of Release
Joseph Cross, the Art Lead for Bungie’s upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter Marathon, has announced his departure from the studio after 14 years. The exit comes just months before the game’s scheduled release in March 2026.
A Voluntary Exit Cross confirmed that his resignation was entirely of his own volition. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed pride in the work his team accomplished: “I’m incredibly proud of the visual world we built for Marathon. Getting support at this scale for something a bit different is rare, and the art team at Bungie is the best in the biz.”
He clarified to Kotaku that his decision was personal and not a result of the recent plagiarism scandal involving the game’s marketing assets, which was resolved earlier this month.
Context of the Departure The departure follows a significant overhaul of Marathon revealed in a recent gameplay “deep dive,” introducing features like solo queues and proximity chat. The game also appears to have swapped its original tagline, “Escape will make me God,” for “Death is the first step.”
With a release targeted for March 2026, Cross leaves behind a project he spent six years helping to shape, stating he looks forward to playing the final game “as a fan.”
