The video game industry has been shaken by the devastating news that Vince Zampella, the co-creator of Call of Duty and Head of Respawn Entertainment, has died. He was 55 years old.
According to reports, Zampella passed away following a single-vehicle car accident in Los Angeles on December 21, 2025.
A Tragic Loss for Gaming
Local news outlets, including NBC Los Angeles, reported that the crash occurred around 12:30 PM. Zampella was reportedly driving a 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS at the time of the incident. Tragically, a passenger in the vehicle also lost their life.
Details regarding the specific cause of the crash are still emerging, though early reports suggest the vehicle was involved in a severe collision on a winding road. The news has sent shockwaves through the gaming community, with fans and colleagues alike expressing their disbelief and sorrow just days before Christmas.
The Architect of Modern Shooters
Vince Zampella’s influence on the first-person shooter (FPS) genre is arguably unmatched in the modern era. His career is defined by two massive pillars that changed how we play games:
- Infinity Ward & Call of Duty: Zampella was instrumental in the creation of the Call of Duty franchise. Alongside Jason West, he steered the series into the juggernaut it is today, specifically with the release of the groundbreaking Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007.
- Respawn Entertainment: After a high-profile departure from Activision, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment. Under his leadership, the studio released critical darlings and commercial hits including the Titanfall series, the battle royale phenomenon Apex Legends, and the acclaimed Star Wars Jedi series (Fallen Order and Survivor).
Industry Reactions
Tributes have begun to pour in across social media, with players citing Titanfall 2 and Modern Warfare 2 as defining titles of their childhoods.
“He defined my childhood,” wrote one user on Push Square. Another added, “Titanfall 2 is an absolute masterpiece… He certainly left his mark in gaming history.”
Zampella’s ability to consistently lead teams to produce high-quality, “fun-first” gameplay experiences made him a rare figure in an industry often criticized for corporate stagnation. His passing marks the end of an era for AAA gaming development.
Our thoughts are with Vince Zampella’s family, friends, and the team at Respawn Entertainment during this difficult time.
