Blizzard Entertainment is doubling down on its most beloved universes. In a recent statement, President Johanna Faries clarified the company’s forward-looking strategy: prioritize the expansion of existing heavy hitters like World of Warcraft and Diablo rather than diverting resources to brand-new intellectual properties.
Faries, who took the helm in 2024 following a tenure as general manager of Call of Duty, emphasized the untapped potential within Blizzard’s current portfolio. “We have iconic IP and in many ways it still has a lot of room to scale,” Faries noted. The executive vision suggests that while new territories aren’t off the table forever, the immediate goal is to “home in on all the iconic stature that we have in the tank.”
A Portfolio Approach to Releases
This strategy is not just about maintenance; it is about aggressive scaling and consistent output. Faries outlined a plan to treat the company’s games as a cohesive portfolio, aiming to deliver “at least one to two really big things” every calendar year. By configuring their slate this way, Blizzard intends to stay top-of-mind for gamers by leveraging multi-franchise opportunities continuously.
The roadmap reflects this focus. World of Warcraft: Midnight, anticipated to be a massive expansion, is scheduled for March 2, followed closely by Diablo 4’s next expansion, Lord of Hatred, in late April. With the 10th anniversary of Overwatch and the return of BlizzCon on the horizon, the studio is signaling a robust pipeline built entirely on the foundations of its established successes.
