The internet is a strange place, and the latest gaming rumor to take over social media proves it. Over the last 24 hours, the phrase “Nintendo buying Xbox” has been trending across platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Google, leaving many gamers confused, amused, or downright baffled.
How the Hoax Started
The rumor appears to have originated from a Facebook page titled “Nintendo Fans.” A post sharing a fabricated image—likely mimicking a breaking news headline—claimed that the Japanese gaming giant was acquiring Microsoft’s Xbox division.

Despite obvious errors in the image (such as misspelling “Banjo-Kazooie”), the post gained significant traction, racking up thousands of likes, comments, and shares. The algorithm picked up the engagement, pushing the topic into trending lists and leading many casual observers to Google the “news” to see if it was real.
The Reality Check
To be clear: Nintendo is not buying Xbox.
While the idea is amusing to some, the logistics make it impossible. Microsoft, a tech titan worth trillions, owns the Xbox brand. While Xbox’s hardware sales have fluctuated, the division’s value far exceeds Nintendo’s cash reserves.
Ironically, history actually favors the reverse scenario. In the early 2000s, Microsoft famously attempted to acquire Nintendo, a meeting where Nintendo executives reportedly “laughed their asses off” at the proposal. More recently, leaked emails from 2020 revealed that Xbox boss Phil Spencer still viewed acquiring Nintendo as a “career moment,” though no such deal ever materialized.
For now, Mario and Master Chief remain friendly rivals, not corporate siblings.
