Why Path of Exile 2 is the Challenge We Needed – Review 15/20
Review – Early Access Impressions
Path of Exile 2 has finally arrived, bringing with it a dark, gritty atmosphere and a level of depth that is both awe-inspiring and terrifying. As a sequel to the ARPG giant, it promises to revolutionize the genre while keeping the hardcore spirit of its predecessor alive. After spending time with the Witch (Necromancer build), here is the breakdown of how the game stacks up.
1. Visuals & Atmosphere: 4/5
“Grim, Gorgeous, and Convincing”
The first thing that hits you is the graphic design. It is simply nice—crisp, detailed, and moody. The game leans heavily into a dark fantasy aesthetic that feels grounded and visceral.
The narrative delivery is a massive step up. Gone are the days of squinting at walls of text; the quests feel modern and immersive. The voice acting is stellar, doing the heavy lifting for you so you don’t need to read every line to understand the stakes. It is very convincing and draws you into the world immediately.
2. Gameplay & Combat: 4/5
“A Challenger’s Dream”
If you thought you could breeze through this game, the first boss fight will humble you immediately. It sets the tone perfectly: this is a difficult and punishing experience.
Playing as the Witch (Necromancer), the challenge is distinct. While summoner archetypes in games like Diablo IV or Last Epoch can often feel like “walking simulators” where minions do all the work, Path of Exile 2 demands active participation. You have to manage your positioning and resources carefully. The difficulty is significantly higher than Diablo IV, which is a massive plus for players looking for a genuine challenge. The addition of the dodge roll mechanic also adds a layer of action-combat fluidity that the genre desperately needed.
3. Systems & Depth: 3/5
“Intimidating but Rewarding”
The systems here are a tale of two extremes. On one hand, the Skill System (Gems) is surprisingly straightforward. It’s easy to understand how active skills and support gems interact, making the initial build-crafting feel intuitive.
On the other hand, the Passive Skill Tree is absolutely terrifying. “Mind-boggling” is the only way to describe the sheer number of nodes and paths available. For a new player, opening that menu is a jump scare. However, this complexity suggests infinite replayability for those brave enough to master it. A notable new feature worth mentioning is Dual Specialization, allowing you to assign points to specific weapon sets, adding even more depth to the chaos.
4. User Experience (UX): 4/5
“Clear and Functional”
Despite the complexity of the game’s math, the interface is trying its best to be helpful. The inventory is exactly what you expect from the genre—nothing revolutionary, but straightforward and effective.
A highlight is the Map and Minimap. In a genre often plagued by confusing overlays, these are clean and easy to read, making navigation a breeze even in dark, twisted dungeons.

Overall Score: 15/20
Conclusion: Path of Exile 2 is not for the faint of heart, but that is exactly why it shines. It balances a terrifyingly complex passive tree with intuitive combat and stellar production values. If you are tired of ARPGs that hold your hand, this is the wake-up call you’ve been waiting for.
