Meta Quest 3S Claims Title of Cheapest VR Headset as PSVR2 Discounts End
As the holiday shopping season reaches its final stretch, the virtual reality market has seen a significant shift in value proposition. The Meta Quest 3S has officially solidified its position as the most affordable entry point into modern VR, while Sony’s PlayStation VR2 has returned to its steeper launch pricing following a brief period of discounts.
The Quest 3S Advantage
Meta’s budget-friendly headset, the Quest 3S, is currently retailing for $299. This price point makes it the most accessible option for consumers looking to dive into mixed reality and VR without breaking the bank. Despite being the “lite” version of the Quest 3, it packs the same powerful Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset and full color passthrough capabilities, offering a premium experience at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.
Included with the headset is a copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow and a three-month subscription to Meta Quest+, adding even more value to the package for new adopters.
PSVR2 Returns to Premium Pricing
In contrast, the PlayStation VR2 has seen its temporary holiday discounts evaporate. The headset, which requires a PlayStation 5 to operate, has reverted to its standard MSRP of $549.99. While the device boasts high-end features like OLED panels, eye tracking, and haptic feedback, the $250 price difference—plus the cost of the console—creates a high barrier to entry compared to Meta’s standalone solution.
The Verdict for Holiday Shoppers
For gamers looking for a standalone, wire-free experience with a massive library of games, the $299 Meta Quest 3S is currently the unrivaled champion of value. Meanwhile, the PSVR2 remains a luxury peripheral for dedicated PS5 enthusiasts, but with the recent price hike back to standard levels, it’s a much harder sell for impulse holiday buyers.
