Nex Playground CEO Talks Comparisons to Xbox & PS5 and Why Their Console is So Affordable

Nex Playground, a family-focused console that recently outsold Xbox during Black Friday in the US, is carving a niche by prioritizing affordability and active play over high-end graphics. In a recent interview, Nex CEO David Lee discussed the console’s unique position in the market, comparing its capabilities to older generations like the PS3 while highlighting its modern appeal.

Affordable Fun Over High-End Specs Retailing at just $249, the Nex Playground is designed to be accessible. Lee openly admits the console isn’t trying to compete with the graphical power of the Xbox Series X or PS5. “Our graphic capabilities on Nex Playground is roughly similar to PS3. But we can create great games on PS3… It’s 10x the Wii,” Lee stated, emphasizing that lower specs don’t prevent immersive gameplay.

The “Play Pass” Model To maintain its low price point, Nex has adopted a subscription-based model called “Play Pass,” similar to Xbox Game Pass. This recurring revenue stream is crucial for the sustainability of the platform, allowing the company to continuously update the OS and release new experiences without relying solely on hardware margins.

Motion-Based Gaming for Families The console operates without a traditional controller, using motion tracking technology reminiscent of the Xbox Kinect. It features games based on popular family IP like Bluey, Sesame Street, and Kung Fu Panda. This focus on casual, physical play has resonated with consumers, with the console selling 600,000 units this year—a fourfold increase over the previous year.

Future Plans Looking ahead to 2026, Nex plans to expand beyond North America, with a long-term goal of bringing the Playground to “every living room.”
