Gran Turismo 7 Defies Industry Trends with Growing Player Base
In an industry where most video games see their player engagement peak at launch and steadily decline, Gran Turismo 7 is charting a completely different course. Sony and Polyphony Digital have revealed that the PS5 racing simulator is experiencing a “phenomenon” of growth that is unprecedented for the platform.
Speaking at the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Finals in Fukuoka, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi disclosed that the game is currently attracting over two million monthly active users. More surprisingly, the number of new users is continuing to rise years after its initial release.
“The status that Gran Turismo 7 is in now is probably the best of any Gran Turismo titles that we’ve had in the past,” Yamauchi stated. “We’ve never experienced this phenomenon before, and neither has PlayStation.”
A Victory for Long-Term Support
What makes this achievement particularly notable is that Gran Turismo 7 has achieved this growth without being added to subscription services like PlayStation Plus or seeing significant price drops. Instead, the game’s longevity is attributed to consistent, high-quality post-launch support.
Polyphony Digital has maintained a steady stream of updates, including the recent “Spec 3” update which added substantial free content, and the Power Pack expansion. This strategy of treating the game as a living platform has evidently paid off, keeping the community engaged and attracting newcomers long after the initial hype cycle has ended.
